The Marlborough Electric Power Trust is seeking to appoint an experienced Independent Director to the Board of Marlborough Lines Limited (MLL), as part of its ongoing Board renewal and succession planning.
MLL has been powering Marlborough for more than 100 years and owns and operates the electricity distribution network across the greater Marlborough region. Wholly owned by the Marlborough Electric Power Trust on behalf of approximately 26,500 consumer beneficiaries, MLL has grown into a substantial and diversified New Zealand group with significant commercial investments and assets exceeding $700 million.
The Opportunity
The existing Board brings considerable expertise across electricity, infrastructure, finance and investment. This appointment is an opportunity to complement those strengths with broader commercial capability, fresh thinking and a strong focus on business performance and long-term value creation.
The Trust is particularly interested in candidates with a proven commercial track record, ideally gained in FMCG, retail, food and beverage, export or other consumer-focused businesses. Experience in sales, marketing, brand development, market strategy and international markets would be highly relevant.
The Ideal Candidate
Successful candidates will demonstrate:
- Strong commercial acumen and sound business judgement
- Proven governance experience and strategic thinking
- An understanding of competitive markets, business growth and value creation
- The confidence to question assumptions, challenge constructively and hold management accountable for performance
- Independence, integrity and the ability to contribute a different perspective around the Board table
Experience in business transformation, performance improvement or commercial turnaround situations would be particularly valuable.
The successful candidate will bring a commercially astute and forward-thinking approach, while appreciating the responsibilities of governing a community-owned organisation and delivering sustainable, long-term value for its beneficiaries.
Electricity industry experience is not essential. The Trust welcomes interest from suitably experienced candidates throughout New Zealand.
The Board meets approximately seven times annually in Marlborough, with in-person attendance expected. This is a remunerated appointment.
