Are you an experienced HR Business Partner who enjoys building leadership capability, leading change and making a genuine organisational impact? This is an opportunity to join Nelson City Council at an exciting time of transformation and help shape the employee experience across a diverse, customer-focused organisation.
Supporting approximately 180 employees within the People and Customer Directorate, you’ll be a trusted advisor to leaders across the full employee lifecycle, from employee relations and performance coaching through to organisational development, wellbeing and strategic change.
About this role
Reporting to the Manager People & Capability, you’ll work alongside Executive Directors and managers to deliver practical, people-focused solutions that strengthen leadership, culture and organisational performance.
Alongside your HR Business Partner portfolio, you’ll lead Council’s wellbeing programme while contributing to organisation-wide initiatives that support Council’s future direction.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Coaching and developing leaders
- Supporting organisational change, development and transformation
- Leading and enhancing Council’s wellbeing programme
- Recruitment, workforce planning and talent management
- Employee relations and performance management
- Using people insights to support decision making
- Contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives

About you
You’ll be an experienced HR professional who combines strategic thinking with practical delivery and builds trusted relationships at all levels.
You’ll bring:
- Experience as an HR Business Partner, Senior HR Advisor or similar
- A strong generalist HR background
- Sound knowledge of New Zealand employment legislation
- Proven coaching and influencing skills
- Excellent stakeholder management
- Confidence managing complex people matters and organisational change
- A tertiary qualification in Human Resources, Organisational Psychology or a related discipline
Experience in organisational development, transformation, or change management will be an advantage.
