Our Client
Selwyn Water is a new Council Controlled Organisation (CCO) established to deliver safe, reliable drinking water and wastewater services to the Selwyn district – with the sole focus, specialist expertise and long-term planning needed to support a fast-growing community. It combines public ownership with water focused expertise governed by an Independent Board.

With a focus on sustainability, resilience and community outcomes, Selwyn Water takes an intergenerational, community first approach to ensure decisions made today benefit our people, environment and future generations. For more information go to: Selwyn Water 2026

The Opportunity
You will join an existing Board providing governance of a high functioning organisation that aligns with legislative change and new regulatory, economic, environmental and water standards. This is an opportunity for experienced candidates to lead the development of the organisation’s long term strategic direction and support the executive team to deliver the Water Services Delivery Plan.

The protection and enhancement of the public health outcomes of high-quality drinking and wastewater services will be a hallmark of Selwyn Water’s focus, as will the provision of good governance practice and financial sustainability, while championing innovation and transparency in a rapidly moving start-up environment.

Expressions of interest from potential Non-Executive Directors are being sought. The Council is seeking skill diversity on its Board, with a preference given to candidates with experience and credibility in some of the following areas:

  • Water or infrastructure
  • Engineering and asset management
  • Risk and commercial acumen
  • Establishment and delivery leadership
  • Transformation and digital curiosity
  • Governance capability
  • Selwyn district insights and connection
  • Demonstrated ability to partner with Ngāi Tahu and local rūnanga
  • Public sector or Council Controlled Organisation appreciation
  • Financial and commercial acumen
  • Public health and regulatory knowledge
  • Legal knowledge within regulated environments

We encourage expressions of interest from candidates who may not meet all of the above criteria but bring relevant skills and perspectives.
