Operating across multiple sites in Waitohi-Picton, Motuweka-Havelock and the picturesque Marlborough Sounds, they facilitate a variety of shipping and marine activities, including Cook Strait ferry operations, cargo exports, and aquaculture services, while also managing three significant marinas. The Marine Team provides towage and pilotage services to Port Marlborough’s export shipping, cruise and Cook Strait ferry customers and is responsible for the management and maintenance of the company’s marine fleet of three harbour tugs, a purpose-built pilot launch and other smaller work craft.  We are looking for a highly skilled and experienced Marine Pilot to play a crucial role in ensuring the safe and efficient navigation of vessels through Queen Charlotte Sound and other Marlborough Sounds pilotage areas.

About the Role
Reporting to the Marine Manager, the Marine Pilot is an integral part of the Marine Team, delivering high-quality pilotage and towage services. You will work collaboratively with marine stakeholders, continuously improve marine operating procedures, and ensure vessels comply with relevant maritime regulations.
Key Responsibilities:

  • Maintain and exercise the use of a Class A pilotage licence for Queen Charlotte Sound (and other pilotage areas as required).
  • Ensure the safe navigation and manoeuvring of vessels under all weather and tidal conditions.
  • Actively engage in risk assessment and compliance with maritime safety codes.
  • Work closely with tug and launch crews, ferry masters, ships’ agents, and Maritime NZ.
  • Participate in continuous improvement initiatives for marine operations.
  • Provide operational and administrative support within the Marine Team.

About You
To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Master Mariner qualification with the ability to maintain an A Grade Pilot’s Licence for Queen Charlotte Sound.
  • Experience in port and international shipping environments, with knowledge of passenger and freight ferry operations being an advantage.
  • Strong navigation and manoeuvring skills, with a high level of situational awareness.
  • Excellent communication and relationship skills, with a collaborative approach to working with diverse stakeholders.
  • Competency in risk assessment and marine safety systems.
  • A strong commitment to health, safety, and environmental best practices.
  • A current A Grade Marine Medical and a full NZ driver’s licence.
